It is common in Europe and dates back to the Caspian Sea basin (Sambucus nigra L.). It is the fruit of the greatest importance to the Slavs of our repertoire. “The holy tree of the spirits of the underworld was the black elder, which had the power to mediate between mortals and the land of the dead. Both in the Slavs and in Europe in general, it was forbidden to tear or cut it out. At its roots, the snake, the guardian of the underworld, was to have a habitat. The Hutsuls believe that a good and obliging spirit, the guardian of the house and the farmyard, lives in the lilac bush growing near the hut. (…) So when it was necessary to fell a tree, people prayed to the spirit that inhabited it, asking for permission to cut it down. Food and drink offerings were made under the lilac, sometimes it was also poured with milk. The curse was reversed by hitting each other with a branch of lilac. The spirit inhabiting the bush was approached for healing by tying a thread or ribbon on a twig and making an appropriate request. There was a proper place under the trunk to bury the items used in conjuring the disease. “
